Published reports indicate that DePuy ASR and Zimmer Durom hips and Zimmer NexGen knees have a history of failing at a significantly higher rate than normal. Most hip and knee replacements last about 15 years, but some orthopedic surgeons report that a high percentage of patients who received these replacement joints have been forced to undergo painful revision surgeries to repair or replace failed joints.

Billings DePuy ASR and Zimmer Durom Hip Lawsuits

DePuy Orthopaedics has recalled its ASR hip replacement system because of the high rate of revision surgeries required. According to DePuy, about 93,000 of these artificial hips have been implanted and approximately one out of eight recipients will need revision surgery to correct or replace the device. Reports indicate that the device can become loose or even dislocated. Patients experience severe pain, swelling, and difficulty walking. In addition, wear in the joint may cause small metal fragments to dislodge from the joint and cause inflammation in the surrounding tissue.

The Zimmer NexGen knee systems have also experienced a high revision rate. Zimmer has recalled some of the components of their knee systems to address design or manufacturing defects. Medical studies indicate that Zimmer NexGen knee replacement systems are prone to loosening where they are joined to the top of the femur. Patients with failed NexGen knees experience severe pain and discomfort, difficulty walking and standing, and ultimately have to undergo a second or subsequent surgery to repair or replace the joint.
