What is sex abuse?
Sex abuse is any sexual activity that the victim does not want or agree to, and includes rape and attempted rape, child molestation, exhibitionism, voyeurism, incest, and sexual harassment. Sex abuse can occur in a variety of situations, such as date rape, domestic violence, work place harassment, or with a stranger.
The sex abuse offender can be anyone, including close family members, relatives, a friend, an intimate partner, a coworker, or a stranger. Child sex abuse is any sexual activity with a child by an adult, an adolescent, or an older child. Sex abuse can range from inappropriate touching to intercourse, or can be a verbal, visual, or audio situation that forces a person into unwanted sexual attention or contact. Sexual harassment, another type of sex abuse, is any deliberate or repeated verbal comments, gestures or behaviors of a sexual nature that are unwelcome.
Victims of sex abuse can be all ages, male or female, and from any ethnic background or economic class. All forms of sex abuse are crimes and should be taken seriously. Even if the victim was under the influence of drugs or alcohol when the sex abuse occurred, it is still a crime and should be reported. To help alleviate the trauma that the victim is going through, it is important for a sex abuse victim to be represented by legal counsel.
